This is Imperial Oil
Coast-to-coast operations

Overview

Imperial Oil currently operates four plants at its Cold Lake operation – Leming, Maskwa, Mahihkan and Mahkeses. In 2004, the company received regulatory approval for an additional three-phase expansion in a new area called Nabiye.

The proposed Nabiye project, when completed, will add 30,000 barrels a day of bitumen production from three new production phases (phases 14 to16) at a new plant, and will access more than 250 million barrels of resource at Cold Lake.

Project enhancements
Since receiving regulatory approval in 2004, Imperial has made technology enhancements for the Cold Lake operation and, as a result of these advances, is proposing the following three changes to the approved Nabiye project:
  1. The addition of a 170MW cogeneration facility to efficiently generate both steam and electrical power. The proposed system will supply power for Nabiye and is similar to the unit in operation at Mahkeses. A 144 kV transmission line will be built to connect Nabiye to the Mahihkan North substation for exporting power for use by the other Imperial Cold Lake operations or for sale on the provincial grid. The cogeneration of steam and electricity will provide an overall reduction in emissions compared to the separate generation of steam and electricity.
  2. The installation of hydrogen sulphide removal facilities to remove about 70 percent of the hydrogen sulphide in the produced gas, thereby reducing sulphur dioxide emissions by about 70 percent when the gas is combusted as fuel.
  3. An updated field development plan to reduce surface footprint and disturbance associated with the field development by about 50 percent. The revised layout will use horizontal and vertical deviated wells to increase the area of the bitumen reservoir accessed from a single pad, thereby reducing the footprint.
Commitments made in the original application and during consultation are still valid and will continue to be honored by Imperial.

Amendment application

The following amendment application was submitted to the Energy Resources and Conservation Board and Alberta Environment on September 29, 2009:

Project schedule
Subject to timely receipt of regulatory approvals and favourable business and market conditions, Imperial plans to proceed with the revised project as early as 2010.
